Kaukahi is a blend of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian sounds: acoustic guitar, ukulele kani, Hawaiian Slack Key, and nahenahe four-part male harmonies. Kaukahi means “singleness of purpose,” and consists of four accomplished musicians dedicated to the traditions of Hawaii. The acoustic folk group formed in 2004 during an impromptu jam session. Kaukahi’s plaintive English and Hawaiian lyrics and deep, soothing vocals have won them thousands of fans worldwide.

Barrett Awai and Dean Wilhelm are former members of Pai’ea, a Na Hoku Hanohano Award finalist, and have been friends since middle school. Kawika Kahiapo has been on the scene since 1978 when he played with Chucky boy Chock.  He has worked with Palani Vaughan, Na Leo, and Slack key Masters, and has contributed to more than 55 recordings including “Curious George” with Jack Johnson. Walt Keale comes from a family imbibed with the traditions of Hawaiian music; he is nephew to well-known Hawaiian artist Uncle Moe Keale and a cousin to Brother IZ.

Kaukahi’s 2004 debut album, Life In These Islands, won three Hoku Awards including Group of the Year.  Kahiapo was honored with a Ki Ho’alu Award from the Hawaii Association of Recording Artists and two Hoku awards.  In April, the group toured with Jack Johnson in Japan, playing to more than 12,000.
