Si*Sé
Formed in 2000 by singer Carol C and programmer and DJ Cliff Cristofaro (U.F.Low), Si*Sé is a combination of hip-hop, Latin rhythms, and down-tempo electronica. Carol C’s soulful and smooth voice delivers Spanish and English lyrics against the minimalist beats provided by U.F.Low, armed with a single drum machine, and backed by viola players, Tarrah Reynolds and Olivia Martinez, percussionist Neil Ochoa, bassist Morgan Phillips, and drummer Ryan Farley. Carol C, whose family is from the Dominican Republic, started singing at the age of four. SiSe formed when a mutual friend, Hector Batista, introduced Carol C to fellow underground artist, and Flatbush, Brooklyn-born U.F.Low. Meeting once, Carol C and U.F.Low hit it off. Shortly after, they recorded a five-track demo in one day. Turning to mutual friends for the electronics, the group found their sound in Lower East Side basements and downtown bars in New York, driving interest in the group from record labels. Michael Mangini, a Grammy-award winning producer who has worked with Digable Planets, The Corrs, and Run DMC among others, co-produced Si*Sé’s well-received self-titled debut album. Si*Sé ’s music has been featured on Sex in the City, One Tree Hill, Six Feet Under, Road Rules, and Project Runway. The group has played with David Byrne, Cesaria Evora, James Brown, Norah Jones, and Kratwerk. Si*Sé ’s second album, More Shine, was released in 2005.
“Si*Se is a bilingual septet from New York specializing in the fusion of chilly electronic beats with a warm, pan-Latino sensibility."– Los Angeles Times |
