Getting to the Grove

Stern Grove Festival takes place in Sigmund Stern Grove, located at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard in San Francisco.

Stern Grove is NOT in Golden Gate Park.

Public Transportation

Patrons are encouraged to use public transportation.

MUNI

Muni Metro: take lines M Ocean View or the K Ingleside and exit at the St. Francis Circle stop. Walk West one block to the park entrance at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard.

Muni Bus: lines 23-Monterey and 28-19th Avenue stop right at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard.

BART

  • BART to Civic Center and transfer to Muni Metro M Ocean View or the K Ingleside
  • BART to Glen Park Station and transfer to MUNI bus 23-Monterey
  • BART to Daly City and transfer to MUNI bus 28-19th Avenue

Parking

There is no public parking area at Stern Grove on concert Sundays. Parking in the area is extremely limited.

Patrons are encouraged to use public transportation. If you must drive, please respect our neighbors and do not block driveways and crosswalks! Violators will be ticketed or towed.


Biking

Bikes can be stored with the Festival's free bike valet at the main entrance to the park at 19th and Sloat Boulevard.

The valet service will open at 10:00 a.m. and close one hour after the concert ends. Bikes are not allowed in the Concert Meadow or Esplanade area of Stern Grove.

Concerts begin at 2:00 p.m. Concerts usually end between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m.

Stern Grove is a public park and is open to the public from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Access

  • Arrive early for best seating. Seating is first come, first served. 
  • For the safety and comfort of our patrons, the Concert Meadow may close to admittance if capacity is reached. 
  • Festival staff will begin hand-stamping at the entrances at approximately 10 a.m. If the Concert Meadow closes, only patrons with hand stamps will be allowed into the Concert Meadow.
  • Aisles and walkways must be kept clear at all times.
  • Management reserves the right to revoke admittance.
  • Backstage areas are restricted to authorized personnel.
  • Unattended personal items, such as ground covers, bags, blankets, coolers, etc., will be removed from the Concert Meadow and stored at the Information Booth.

General Seating

General seating is first come, first served. Arrive early for best seating.

Benches are reserved for seniors and disabled patrons and seats are first come, first served. Click here for more info.

Share the Space! To make room for everyone to experience the performances, at least one person must be present to reserve a maximum space of approximately 8x10 feet with a blanket/ground cover in the Concert Meadow.

All unoccupied personal items, including bags, blankets, and ground covers will be removed and can be collected at the Information Booth.

To ensure visibility for all patrons, tents and large shade structures are not allowed. If you have a small umbrellas be aware that it must be down prior to and during the performance.

Please bring only lawn chairs that are low to the ground with backs at shoulder height.

Please be considerate so everyone can enjoy the day!

When the Concert Meadow Closes

Seating at Stern Grove Festival is first come first served. Stern Grove is a public park and is open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

For the comfort and safety of our patrons, the Concert Meadow will be closed to further entry if and when capacity is reached.

An announcement will be made from stage 30 minutes prior to the closing of the Concert Meadow.

Festival staff will begin hand stamping at the entrances at approximately 10 a.m. If the Concert Meadow closes, only patrons with hand stamps will be allowed into the Concert Meadow. Patrons with hand stamps can pass in and out of the Concert Meadow throughout the day.

When the announcement is made that the Concert Meadow is closing, incoming shuttle service to the Concert Meadow will be terminated.

Patrons who arrive at the main entrance at 19th and Sloat Boulevard after the closing of the Concert Meadow will be directed to the West Meadow area and will not be allowed to enter into the Concert Meadow.

The West Meadow area can be accessed from the Vale Avenue entrance to the park. There is no public parking.

Patron Information

Smoking of any kind, including electronic or vapor cigarettes, is not allowed anywhere in the park, as stated in the City of San Francisco Health Code.

Unauthorized sales, solicitation, and distribution are prohibited.

Entry into Stern Grove Festival constitutes your consent for the Festival and licensed parties to use, in any manner or purpose without payment, your picture in photographs and video taken at Stern Grove Festival.

A reminder that, for everyone’s safety and security, all unattended personal items, including bags, blankets and ground covers, will be removed and can be collected at Lost and Found at the Information Booth.

 

What Not To Bring:

Pets, aside from licensed service animals, are not allowed in the Concert Meadow. Leashed pets are allowed in the West Meadow.

High-backed chairs, large or tall tables, tents, and large shade structures.

Barbecues, grills or any item with open flame.

Video or audio recording equipment. Video or audio recording of the performances is not allowed.

Professional still camera equipment with a detachable lens longer than two inches, tripods, or big zooms.

Bicycles are not allowed in the Concert Meadow. Please store bicycles with the bike valet at the main entrance at 19th and Sloat.

Skateboards, scooters, hover boards, or any personal motorized vehicles are not allowed in the Esplanade or Concert Meadow.

Firearms or weapons of any kind.

Fireworks and explosives.

Illegal substances.

 

What To Bring:

Blankets and ground covers no larger than 8x10 feet. 

Small umbrellas and low chairs with backs at shoulder height. To ensure visibility for all patrons, tents, tall or large tables, and large shade structures are not allowed. If you have a small umbrella it must be down prior to and during the performance.

Picnics and coolers are allowed.

Alcohol is permitted in the Concert Meadow and West Meadow on concert Sundays for patrons of legal drinking age. Alcohol is not sold at Stern Grove Festival.

Personal cameras with a lens two inches or shorter. Photography or recording of the artists and performances is prohibited.

Strollers are allowed, provided they are folded down during the performance and not blocking walkways or in the aisles.

There are two refillable water stations located in the Esplanade and in the West Meadow. You can fill your own water bottles, or you can purchase a reusable Stern Grove Festival water bottle at the Festival Shop or the VIP Check-In Booth in the West Meadow.

Food and Drink

You are welcome to bring your own picnics and beverages (including alcohol).

Alcohol is not sold at Stern Grove Festival.

The Grove Cafe, located in the Esplanade, offers an assortment of food and drinks (cash only). A portion of all food and beverage sales supports Stern Grove Festival.

Barbecues or open flame of any kind are not allowed on concert Sundays due to fire regulations.

 

Trash, Compost & Recycling

Trash, compost and recycling containers are located throughout the Grove. Please dispose of your trash. Pack out what you pack in!

Stern Grove is a public park…help keep it beautiful.

Lost & Found

Lost and found items are stored at the Information Booth in the Esplanade during Sunday concerts.

After the concert, call Stern Grove Festival at 415.252.6252.

Please be aware of personal items. The Festival cannot assume responsibility for lost or stolen items.

An ATM is located in the Esplanade, next to the Festival Shop.

Festival Shop

Stern Grove Festival merchandise and artists' recordings are available from the Festival Shop in the Esplanade. Sales benefit the Festival's admission-free concerts and education programs.

Seniors and Patrons with Disabilities

Parking

A limited number of handicapped permit parking spaces will be available on a first come, first served basis along Sloat Boulevard, just past the main entrance to Stern Grove at 19th Avenue and Sloat. There is no other designated parking area.

 

Shuttle

Round-trip, wheelchair accessible shuttle service is provided between the 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard entrance and the Concert Meadow area.

A drop-off area is located at the entrance to the park on Sloat Boulevard.

The shuttle runs from 10:00 a.m. until the concert starts at 2:00 p.m.

The shuttle resumes service at 3:30 p.m. and runs until 5:30 p.m.

If the senior bench seating and ADA seating sections in the Concert Meadow are at capacity, patrons will be informed by the shuttle attendant before they board the shuttle.

 

PLEASE NOTE:

If the Concert Meadow closes, inbound shuttle service down to the Concert Meadow will stop.

 

Seating

Bench seating is available on a first come, first served basis for seniors over the age of 65 or disabled patrons and one guest.

Bench seating is limited and generally full by 1:30 p.m., and on some days, the benches can reach capacity earlier.

 

Wheelchair Access and ADA-Accessible Seats

Patrons in wheelchairs or needing ADA-accessible seating can be accommodated with one companion in designated ADA areas. Designated ADA seating, like all general seating in the Grove, is first come first served. Please see house staff or a volunteer usher for assistance.

FAQs

Do I need tickets or reservations?

All Stern Grove Festival concerts and outreach programs are completely ADMISSION-FREE; no tickets are required.

Tickets are available for The Big Picnic Party, a benefit on opening day before the concert.

A City-wide ordinance (Health Code Section 1009.81) went into effect in 2005, prohibiting smoking in all public parks. For the safety and health of all patrons, smoking, including electronic or vapor cigarettes, is not allowed in any area in Stern Grove park.

 

Can I rent space at Stern Grove for a wedding or event?

To rent the Trocadero Clubhouse or other facilities at Stern Grove for a wedding or special event, please call the Permits and Reservations Office, San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, 415.831.5500.

 

Where can I park my bike?

Complimentary bike valet service is available at the 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard entrance to Stern Grove.

The bike valet is open from 10:00 a.m. until one hour after the concert ends.

Bikes are not allowed in the Concert Meadow or Esplanade at Stern Grove.

 

Are pets allowed?

Pets are not permitted in the Concert Meadow (except service animals) on concert Sundays.

On-leash pets are allowed in other areas of the park. There is a dog park in Pine Lake Park, to the west of the Concert Meadow.
