Stern Grove Festival's Youth Arts Programs
Stern Grove Festival’s admission-free Youth Arts education and outreach programs enrich the lives of Bay Area youth through engaging workshops led by local artists.
Each year, over five thousand children participate in hands-on activities that enhance their understanding of different art forms and cultures and allow them to create a personal connection to the arts. Stern Grove Festival’s Youth Arts programs include Kids Days, Kids Camps, and KidStage.
Whether learning Bhangra dance with Dholrhythms Dance Company, composing their own string quartets with Magik*Magik Orchestra, or creating New Orleans–style art with Chelle! and Friends, Youth Arts programs provide an engaging way for kids to experience and interact with the arts.
Akeelah Bixler, a native San Franciscan who has been attending concerts at Stern Grove Festival since she was a kid, has been bringing her two children to Kids Days and Kids Camps for years. “They’re such exciting, dynamic programs for the kids,” she says. “It’s great exposure for them. It’s the only thing we have in San Francisco that’s like it.”
Jessica Ramirez, another longtime fan of Kids Days and Kids Camps, values the educational opportunities that Stern Grove Festival provides. “Arts education is important because I believe in [my daughter] being well-rounded,” she says. “I believe the arts are a great way to relate to other people.”
Reflecting Stern Grove Festival’s commitment to supporting local artists, the Youth Arts programs are led by teaching artists who are all based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
In this way, the Youth Arts programming comes full circle in fulfilling Stern Grove Festival’s mission to support and promote community-based performing arts, by providing opportunities for local artists to enrich the lives of local children.
Stern Grove Festival's 77th Season of Youth Arts programs will be announced on May 1, 2014.
