MJ’s Brass Boppers
Attending a MJ’s Brass Boppers shows is the next best thing to following a brass band down New Orleans’ famed Claiborne Ave. The swinging and singing brass-line is the Bay Area’s only New Orleans-style brass band whose founding members were born and raised in NOLA itself.
This eight-piece group’s sound has been meticulously formed over years of practicing and experimenting together, fusing classic NOLA performance with funk, jazz, modern pop, and a second line twist.
Since 2008, the tight knit musicians have written, practiced, and performed together at festivals, community events, nightclubs, and street corners around the Bay Area. They’ve opened for a variety of acts, including Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave, Funky Meters, George Porter Jr., Zigaboo Modeliste, and more. Current members include: Michael Jones (snare drum), Greg Gomez (trombone), Naazir Magbool (trumpet), Harold “Homeboy” Wilson (bass drum, percussion), Tom Salvatore (trumpet), Luke Kirley (sousaphone), Mike Waters (sax), and “Big Chief” Ray Blazio, Al Lazard, Nate “Suave” Cameron, Joshua Serotiak, and Malcolm Stokes.
Together, these musicians come together as the versatile MJ’s Brass Boppers, offering a taste of New Orleans style with a West Coast flair.
As part of Stern Grove Festival's Local Artist Commission Series, titled "Interplay: In Concert with Nature", fans can look forward to the debut of a brand new piece by MJ's Brass Boppers.
